  15 <h2><a name="s8">8.</a> <a href="sylpheed.html#toc8">Sylpheed-Claws
  16 configuration</a></h2>
  17 <p>All the configuration settings of Sylpheed-Claws are accessible from
  18 the <i>Configuration</i> menu and consist of common settings <i>(Preferences</i>,
  19 <i>Filtering</i>, <i>Template</i>s, <span style="font-style: italic;">Actions,
  20 </span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">Plugins</span>) and
  21 account specific
  22 settings.</p>
  23 <p>With Sylpheed-Claws, there is no limit to the number of accounts
  24 you can create. You can create new accounts for each of your
  25 mail accounts, but also to change the default behaviour of Sylpheed. As
  26 folders can be attached to accounts, the account
  27 specific part of the configuration automatically change based
  28 on the current folder (you can have a different signature when
  29 replying to messages from different folders, for example).</p>
  30 <h2><a name="ss8.1">8.1</a> <a href="sylpheed.html#toc8.1">Preferences</a>
  31 </h2>
  32 <p>The Common Preferences, found in the Configuration menu, controls
  33 the window layout and the different options of the graphical
  34 interface of Sylpheed. Depending on some compile time switches
  35 (and on the availability of some extra libraries), some tabs
  36 may be included (or not) in your version of Sylpheed. These tabs
  37 are not listed here but are described (or will be described) in
  38 the sections covering the optional features they control (like the
  39 <i>Privacy</i> tab for the GnuPG interface).</p>
  40 <h3>Receive tab</h3>
  41 <p>In here you can set up how to receive messages.</p>
  42 <p>

  45   <li>You can define a special program to pick up messages from the
  46 default unix mailbox. Usually this is not used.</li>
  47   <li><i>Autocheck new mail</i>. When you check this option, Sylpheed
  48 will check if there is new mail on the set interval.</li>
  49   <li><i>Check new mail on startup</i> means that Sylpheed-Claws will
  50 immediately look for new mail on all the selected accounts when it
  51 loads.</li>
  52   <li><i>Update all local folders after incorporation</i> is used to
  53 force scanning of all folders after getting new mail. Used when you
  54 have external programs putting new mails in folders.</li>
  55   <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Show receive dialog</span>
  56 allows you to remove the window displayed when retrieving mails, which
  57 can get in your way if retrieval happens where you're composing a mail,
  58 for example.</li>
  59   <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Don't popup error dialog </span>is
  60 used to specify when to show errors. The advantage of not showing
  61 errors on automatic retrieval, for example, is that it doesn't block
  62 until you click Ok afterwards.</li>
  63   <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Close receive dialog when
  64 finished</span> does what it says :)</li>
  65   <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Run command when new mail
  66 arrives</span> allows you to specify some command to run after
  67 incorporation. You can </li>

  69 <h3>Send tab</h3>
  70 <p>In here you can set up how to send messages.</p>

 194 dialog</span> allows you to get more control on what sylpheed does when

 209 window, the message window and the compose window have toolbars. From
 210 the upper part of the page, you can choose an icon, associate a text to
 211 it, and choose which event to perform when clicked. In the lower part
 212 of the page, you see the buttons displayed in the current toolbar, you
 213 can add and delete them, and change their order.<br>

 218 <h3>Plugins tab</h3>
 219 <p>The plugins tab controls the various plugins preferences. For
 220 example, the pgpcore plugin which brings the crypto operations to
 221 Sylpheed-Claws can be configured to automatically check signatures,
 222 store passphrase or not, and more.</p>

 241 <h2><a name="ss8.2">8.2</a> <a href="sylpheed.html#toc8.2">Setting up
 242 an account/changing an account</a>
 243 </h2>
 244 <p>In order to set up an account in Sylpheed-Claws, in the <i>Configuration</i>
 245 menu you select <i>Create new account</i>. If you want to change the
 246 settings of an existing account and this account is the current
 247 one, in the <i>Configuration</i> menu select <i>Preferences for
 248 current account</i>, otherwise select <i>Edit accounts...</i>.
 249 There you select the account you want to change. After that you press <i>edit</i>.
 250 Then a dialog appears in which you can enter or update the following
 251 areas:</p>
 252 <h3><a name="Basic"></a> Basic tab</h3>
 253 <p>In the "Basic" tab you name the account. This is to make identifying
 254 the account easier. The name is then used in the <i>Change current
 255 account</i>
 256 part of the <i>Configuration</i> menu, or in menu found in the lower
 257 right corner of the main window (used to quickly switch to another
 258 account).</p>
 259 <p>Choose a name that tells something about the account, like the name
 260 of the ISP, mailbox or news-server you are setting up. You can select
 261 this account to be the default account ("Set as default").
 262 The default account can also be defined from the <i>Edit accounts</i>
 263 window (toggle the <i>D</i> column next to the account name).</p>
 264 <p>Enter your name and e-mail address, and if you have one, the
 265 organization that you use Sylpheed-Claws for.
 266 In the Protocol box you select the type of service that this account
 267 will be using. The flavors you can choose are: <i>POP3</i><i></i>, <i>IMAP4</i>,
 268 <span style="font-style: italic;">News (NNTP)</span><i></i> , <span
 269  style="font-style: italic;">Local mbox file, </span>or<i>None (SMTP
 270 only)</i>.</p>
 271 <p>For POP3 and IMAP services you can then specify the server where
 272 your mail is stored. Details about this name, and also the name that
 273 goes into the field for <i>SMTP server (send)</i> should be given to
 274 you by your ISP.</p>
 275 <p>For a local unix mailbox, the <i>Server for receiving</i> is
 276 disabled, since the mail will be received for you.</p>
 277 <p>The fields for <i>User ID</i> and <i>Password</i> will also be
 278 disabled for accounts that do no deal with POP3, IMAP or News services.
 279 Otherwise you can enter the login name and password for the&nbsp;
 280 server with your ISP here. Usually these are the same as your login
 281 name and password to access the dial-in service, but this is not
 282 standard. If in doubt, contact the helpdesk of your ISP.</p>
 283 <h3>Passwords:</h3>
 284 <p>The password is not printed in the entry field (replaced by stars)
 285 and
 286 is stored with a little obfuscation in the Sylpheed-Claws configuration
 287 files. The
 288 Sylpheed
 289 configuration directory (&nbsp;/.sylpheed) is only readable by 'owner',
 290 and
 291 not by 'group' and 'other', do not change these access rights. Do not
 292 consider the password safe if you aren't the administrator of the
 293 machine either - this goes for every software by the way.<br>
 294 </p>
 295 <h3><a name="Receive"></a> Receive tab</h3>
 296 <p>The <i>Receive</i> tab is only used for POP3, IMAP and News
 297 accounts. <br>
 298 </p>
 299 <p>For POP3, you
 300 specify if the mails that were successfully retrieved should be removed
 301 from the server. You can also tell Sylpheed-Claws to get all the messages
 302 there, not only the ones you already received (in case you leave your
 303 messages on the server).
 304 You can choose to leave the messages on the server during a selectable
 305 number of days (then remove them).<br>
 306 You can also define a limit for the size of the messages to
 307 download. Any message bigger than this limit will be&nbsp;
 308 downloaded up to the limit, and you'll be able to get the rest of it
 309 via the message view (or not get it).</p>
 310 <p>For IMAP4, you can choose which kind of authentication to use (ask
 311 your ISP, or try Automatic). <br>
 312 </p>
 313 <p>For News, you can choose what is the maximum numbers of new messages
 314 to download.</p>
 315 <p>You can also choose to filter messages on receiving, if not
 316 set, the messages are only filtered when you use the filter
 317 entry of the Tools menu.</p>
 318 <p>The default inbox defines the folder that receives the incoming
 319 (and not filtered) messages for this account.
 320 You can define a different folder as inbox for each of your
 321 accounts.</p>
 322 <p>If the <i>Get all checks for messages on this account</i> is turned
 323 off, when using the <i>Get all</i> menu entry (or toolbar button)
 324 this account will not be checked. To check for new mails for
 325 this account, you must select the account, then use the <i>Get</i>
 326 toolbar button (or menu entry).</p>
 327 <h3><a name="Send"></a> Send tab</h3>
 328 <p>In the <i>Send</i> tab you can define the settings that apply to
 329 sending mails.</p>
 330 <p>You can choose to add the date field to the messages you send,
 331 generate a unique message identifier, or add custom header
 332 fields.</p>
 333 <h3>X-face pictures:</h3>
 334 <p>The user defined header field should be set up to contain your
 335 X-face picture.

 339 <p>If your SMTP server needs authentication, define the user ID and
 340 password to use in this tab. You can also choose to first authenticate
 341 with
 342 POP3 before sending if the receiving server is POP3.</p>
 343 <h3><a name="Compose"></a> Compose tab</h3>
 344 <p>In the <i>Compose</i> tab you can define your signature file,
 345 choose to always copy someone when sending mails (you can
 346 choose to always copy your boss, or yourself), and define the
 347 Reply-To field for the current account.</p>
 348 <h3><a name="Privacy"></a> Privacy tab</h3>
 349 <p>This tab is only available when Sylpheed-Claws has been compiled
 350 with GPGME and GNUPG (for signature and encryption).</p>
 351 <p>With this tab you can choose the keys to use when signing
 352 or encrypting mails for this account, whether you want your messages to
 353 be signed by default, etc.</p>
 354 <h3><a name="SSL"></a> SSL tab</h3>
 355 <p>This tab is only available when Sylpheed-Claws has been compiled
 356 with openSSL.</p>
 357 <p>With this tab you can choose whether to use SSL on the receiving and
 358 sending servers. STARTTLS is used to connect to the normal, unencrypted
 359 port, and to start encryption later. This is not supported by all
 360 servers, but can be handy for passing misconfigured firewalls.</p>
 361 <p></p>
 362 <h3><a name="Advanced"></a> Advanced tab</h3>
 363 <p>The Advanced tab contains some settings you normally do
 364 not need to change (unless you really know what you are
 365 doing).</p>
 366 <p>You can change the default SMTP or POP3 ports used when
 367 connecting to your mail server, define a domain name to
 368 use when sending a mail. Some ISP (or mail relays) reject
 369 mails without a valid domain name.</p>
 370 <p>The default folders for the sent messages, drafts and
 371 trash can be defined here. If not changed the current account
 372 will use the default folders.</p>
 373 <h3>Attaching accounts to folders</h3>
 374 <p>Pressing the right mouse button over a folder (in the folder pane),
 375 and selecting the <i>Properties</i> entry will open the folder
 376 properties
 377 form. In this form, in the <i>General</i> tab you can see (but not
 378 modify)
 379 the folder name and the corresponding directory path (relative to the
 380 mail
 381 directory). In the <i>Compose</i> tab:</p>
 382 <p>you can select the account, choose to apply this setting also to
 383 the sub-folders.
 384 You can also force the address used when sending mail (to force a
 385 mailing
 386 list address, for example), choose to send a copy of the sent mails
 387 to a list of addresses different from the default one defined for the
 388 selected account.</p>
 389 <h3>Using accounts in the real life</h3>
 390 <p>Accounts can, of course be used to retrieve mails from different
 391 ISPs,
 392 separate your personal and professional messages, but also to make your
 393 life easier.
 394 You can define different accounts just to change your address (as
 395 sender),
 396 your signature, change the sent folder, etc...
 397 Here is a summary of the account specific settings, feel free to
 398 find your own use for them:</p>

 402   <li>Sender name, address and organization. Signature, extra header
 403 fields.</li>
 404   <li>Leave or remove message from server (usefull for debug).</li>
 405   <li>Incoming mails filtering and size limit.</li>
 406   <li>Default field (<i>Reply-To</i>:, <i>Cc:</i>, <i>Bcc:</i>).</li>
 407   <li><i>Draft</i>, <i>Trash</i> and <i>Sent</i> folders.</li>

 410 <p>By attaching accounts to folders, you can control all these settings
 411 on a folder basis, but you can also change the <i>To:</i>, <i>Cc:</i>,
